Gibberish Translation

One player speaks only gibberish, a second translates, and a third responds normally.

How to run it

1. Establish a premise — an expert being interviewed, a witness giving evidence.
2. The gibberish speaker plays real intention, emotion and physicality, but no recognisable words.
3. The translator renders each utterance into English, justifying whatever tone and gesture they saw.
4. The third player responds and asks follow-up questions.
5. Rotate roles so everyone translates at least once.

What it teaches

That meaning lives in tone and body rather than vocabulary, and it forces justification under pressure.

Coaching notes

If the gibberish speaker is generating nonsense syllables without intention, stop and ask them what their character wants. Gibberish with no want is untranslatable.

Where it usually goes wrong

The translator invents freely instead of justifying what was actually performed.
