Word Ladders
A free-association drill you can do anywhere: chain single words aloud, then practise jumping the middle step out.
Also known as: A to C
How to run it
- Say any word aloud. Say the first word it triggers. Keep chaining, one word at a time, out loud — the out-loud part is the exercise.
- Do two minutes without stopping. Repeats are fine; silence is the only failure.
- Then switch to A-to-C: say a word, think of its obvious association, and say the association's association instead — 'bread' → (butter) → 'churn'.
- Finish with a minute of A-to-C at speed.
What it teaches
Trusting the first thought. The chain exposes how often you veto perfectly good offers from your own head before they reach your mouth.
Coaching notes
If you hear yourself pausing to find a better word, you've turned it into a vocabulary test. The word you skipped was the exercise.
Where it usually goes wrong
Doing it silently in your head. Unspoken association costs nothing and trains nothing — the mouth has to commit.
